DEATH AND INJURIES FROM ROAD ACCIDENTS IN GHANA 2021

Road accidents have contributed to Ghana’s highest causes of death so far as the country keeps recording daily cases. About 1.25 million people die each year because of road traffic crashes. The leading cause of road traffic injuries death among people aged between 15 to 29 years. Ghana reported 48 cases of road traffic accidents in the Eastern region, they recorded the highest number of road crashes in 2021. A total of 2,924 persons died in 2021 through road crashes, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA)  revealed. Seventy-four percent of road traffic deaths occur in middle-income countries, which account for only 53 percent of the world's registered vehicles. Every day, almost 3,700 people are killed globally in crashes involving cars, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, or pedestrians.




According to the World health organization(WHO) every year the lives of approximately 1.3 million people are cut short because of road traffic crashes. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Road traffic injuries cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and to nations as a whole. The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that 2,924 lives were lost through road crashes in 2021 ,six lives are lost per day in Ghana to road traffic crashes. In an official release, the MTTD indicated that this is a 12.94% rise compared to last two years' statistics and 2,589 people got killed.

These losses arise from the cost of treatment as well as lost productivity for those killed or disabled by their injuries, and for family members who need to take time off work or school to care for the injured. Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product.
