ETHICAL CINSIDERATIONS IN DIGITAL JOURNALISM
As a level 400 journalism student, my
journey through digital and online studies has been a whirlwind of revelations,
particularly in understanding the vital role that ethical considerations play
in the realm of digital journalism. This essay aims to delve into the intense
importance of ethics within this evolving landscape, drawing on real-world
examples to illuminate the critical impact they have on the integrity,
credibility, and trustworthiness of journalistic endeavors.
Ahmed Hussein-Suale was an investigative
journalist with Tiger Eye PI, an undercover investigative journalism
organization in Ghana. He was tragically assassinated in 2019, allegedly in
connection with his work exposing corruption in Ghanaian football. This case
serves as a stark reminder of the risks journalists face in pursuit of truth.
It underscores the ethical imperative to protect the identities of
investigative journalists and their sources, particularly in sensitive and
high-stakes investigations.
Ghana boasts a rich cultural heritage with numerous traditional events and ceremonies. Ethical considerations come into play when covering these events, as journalists must navigate the fine line between respect for cultural practices and the public’s right to information. Sensationalism or exploitation for views can erode trust and respect between journalists and the communities they cover.
In the age of social media dominance, the ethical responsibilities of journalists have become more nuanced. Ghana, like many democracies, experiences political polarization. Journalists have a responsibility to report objectively and without bias. Instances of slanted reporting can contribute to division and mistrust among citizens. Maintaining ethical standards in political reporting is crucial for fostering a healthy democratic discourse.
The digital realm blurs the lines between
public and private, demanding heightened sensitivity to issues of privacy.
Ghana has a vibrant entertainment industry, and reporting on celebrities is a
significant part of media coverage. However, respecting the privacy of public
figures, even in the face of public interest, is an ethical consideration.
Balancing the public’s curiosity with the rights of individuals to their
personal lives requires sensitivity and discernment.
During public health crises, such as the
COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of misinformation and fake health advice can have
dire consequences. Ethical reporting involves verifying information from
reputable sources and avoiding sensationalism or fear-mongering. Journalists
play a crucial role in disseminating accurate and reliable information to
protect public health.
These Ghanaian-based examples further
highlight the critical role of ethics in digital journalism. They underscore
the need for journalists to uphold principles of accuracy, fairness, privacy,
and responsible reporting to maintain the trust and credibility of the
profession in Ghana’s dynamic media landscape.
